Victorian Adverts

I really love the old Victorian and Edwardian corset adverts.
Towards the end of the Victorian era corsets were becoming much more mass produced thanks to the sewing machine. The first sewing machine to be patented and widely used was in 1842 by John Greenough. Although the British inventor Thomas Saint was the first to patent a design for the sewing machine in 1791, it was never actually built.

With more corsets been mass produced all the time this meant more competition. Company’s began to use advertising to promote their latest designs. The adverts also show some of the more unusual devices that were used to obtain the fashionable figure such as ‘The erection shoulder brace’ and ‘Bust improver’s’

Below are a selection of some of my favourite adverts.
